“An Ineffective Structure”: Former Foreign Minister Ogryzko Criticized NATO and Called for the Creation of a New Alliance

Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Volodymyr Ogryzko stated that NATO as it stands today does not meet the demands of modern warfare.

He made these remarks in a comment to "Shelter."

According to him, reforming the Alliance “is no longer just a theoretical issue, but a practical task” that must be addressed in the near future.

Ogryzko called NATO an “ineffective” organization that “will seek excuses for its inaction.”

Today, there are a lot of “free riders” in NATO—pardon the comparison—who are just along for the ride and think that their security is the responsibility of the U.S. Well, Trump has finally made it clear that this was a serious mistake, and now Europeans have to do something. Not everyone in Europe wants to, and not everyone is convinced that something needs to be done or that someone will help in some way

Therefore, in his opinion, Ukraine should take the lead in creating a new combat-ready alliance.

The former minister believes that an anti-ballistic coalition could serve as a model for such an organization, since modern warfare is fought in the air, with missiles, and using drones.

“An anti-ballistic coalition could lay the groundwork for gradually uniting those countries that are truly capable of and willing to participate in the activities of this new structure,” he noted.

Ogryzko added that in such a format, Ukraine would no longer be a supplicant but would become a country with the right to invite others and would have every reason to be a leading force in the new alliance.

As a reminder, during a discussion on Euro-Atlantic integration at a meeting of ambassadors in Kyiv, Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Valeriy Zaluzhny, said: “Don’t believe the fairy tales; Ukraine will never become a member of NATO.” According to him, it is impossible to join an organization rooted in World War II doctrines with the current level of development of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs subsequently stated that Ukraine’s course toward NATO membership remains unchanged. They added that, as of today, there is no other effective collective security system besides the one based on the Washington Treaty.
