Ukraine’s military intelligence strikes missile carrier Admiral Essen in Novorossiysk

Operators from the Active Operations Department of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, in coordination with other units of the Defense Forces, struck infrastructure at a Russian naval base in Novorossiysk as part of a deep-strike operation.

On the night of September 9, Ukrainian forces struck military facilities of the Russian Navy in Novorossiysk.
The Project 11356 frigate “Admiral Essen” was successfully struck. The hit caused a fire to break out in its deck superstructure.
Background
The “Admiral Essen” carries “Kalibr” cruise missiles, which Russian forces use to strike targets in Ukraine, including civilian targets.
Infrastructure at Russia’s naval base in Novorossiysk was also struck.
The Russian frigate “Admiral Essen” had already been among the targets of the Ukrainian military. In August 2026, the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) and the Ukrainian Defense Forces reported striking the Russian missile carriers “Admiral Essen” and “Admiral Makarov,” as well as the patrol ship “Vasily Bykov.”
As a reminder, on the evening of September 8 and overnight into September 9, 2026, units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces struck a launch site for attack UAVs and the Russian patrol boat “Mangust.”
