More than 95% of Ukrainian prisoners of war are being tortured while in Russian captivity, says Lubinets

This is evidenced by verified data from Dmytro Lubinets, the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights.

According to the ombudsman and international observers, torture in Russian prisons is systematic and organized.

It begins with the very first interrogation and continues throughout the entire period of detention.

The main documented forms of violence are:

• physical abuse: regular brutal beatings with batons, belts, and heavy objects;
• the use of electric shocks and fire;
• sexual and psychological abuse;
• simulated executions and sleep deprivation;
• harassment by dogs and denial of basic medical care.

The Ukrainian side emphasizes that concealing the locations where prisoners are held, denying access to representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and torture constitute a direct violation of the Geneva Conventions and qualify as war crimes.

As a reminder, Lubinets stated that Ukraine has never refused to release any Ukrainian prisoner of war, civilian hostage, or Ukrainian child.
