During the massive nighttime attack on Kyiv, Ukraine’s air defense system failed to intercept any ballistic missiles or six “Zircon” missiles. Therefore, the Ukrainian defense minister will hold a series of talks today with his counterparts—the defense ministers of countries that have missiles for Patriot systems in their stockpiles.

Yuriy Ignat, head of the Communications Department of the Ukrainian Air Force, spoke about this during a televised marathon, and Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov wrote about it on Telegram. ⠀

According to Fedorov, despite the fact that air defenders have successfully destroyed over 90% of attack drones and nearly all cruise missiles, the main reason for the failure to intercept ballistic missiles is a severe shortage of missiles for the Patriot systems.

Russia is deliberately increasing the number of ballistic attacks, using missiles on a scale never seen before, taking advantage of the severe shortage of missiles for the Patriot systems

At the same time, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Air Force explained that the enemy is using this tactic to weaken Ukraine’s air defense, which means it could launch a follow-up strike as early as the next day. ⠀

Ignat emphasized that ignoring air raid alerts is extremely dangerous, though he noted that the aggressor’s capabilities are not unlimited: “If they could shell us every day, they would.” ⠀

The Ukrainian defense minister also added that the situation is complicated by the fact that fewer interceptor missiles are produced worldwide in a month than Russia fires at our country. ⠀

Furthermore, to resolve this issue and save the lives of citizens, the head of the Defense Ministry is proposing a solution to our partners: to temporarily transfer missiles from their stockpiles immediately, and subsequently replace them with Ukrainian contract deliveries set to begin next year. ⠀

The minister emphasized that cautious bureaucracy should not become a barrier to protecting human life, as the Ukrainian air defense system needs additional missiles right now.

As a reminder, on the night of July 6, Russian forces launched an attack on Kyiv. The consequences of the attack were observed in the Podilskyi, Darnytskyi, Holosiivskyi, and Obolonskyi districts of the capital. As of this morning, 11 people are known to have been killed.

As President Volodymyr Zelenskyy added, during the massive nighttime attack, Russia launched 68 missiles and 351 attack drones, resulting in a total of 14 deaths in Kyiv and the surrounding region, with more than 70 others injured.
