Ukrainian Alina Polozuyk won a historic bronze medal at the World Fencing Championships

In the first round of the individual competition, Polozuyk defeated China’s Huang Qianqian with a score of 15–6. In the round of 16, the Ukrainian fencer defeated Moldovan Adeline Senik, the junior world runner-up, 10–9.

In the quarterfinals, Polozuyk faced the world No. 1, three-time world champion, and seven-time European champion Martini Batini of Italy. The Ukrainian fencer confidently defeated her opponent 15–9, securing at least a bronze medal.

In the semifinals, Polozuyk faced Olympic champion Arianna Errigo. The Italian took the initiative from the very first seconds and jumped out to a 5–0 lead. The Ukrainian tried to turn the match around, but Errigo maintained her lead and secured the victory.

Thus, Alina Polozuyk became the bronze medalist at the 2026 World Championships.

This medal is historic for Ukraine: Polozuyk became the first Ukrainian female fencer to stand on the podium at the World Championships in women’s foil.

It is also the first medal for the Ukrainian national team at this year’s world championships. The World Championships will continue on July 28 with team competitions in women’s épée and men’s foil.

As a reminder, Ukrainian track and field athlete Yaroslava Mahuchikh recently won the third stage of the “Diamond League,” which took place as part of one of the most prestigious international track and field tournaments.
