In Ukraine, the death rate is four times higher than the birth rate, according to Opendatabot

At the same time, 259,853 deaths were recorded—the first official increase in the number of deaths in the last five years. The death rate was four times higher than the birth rate.

It is noted that currently, an average of about 12,000 babies are born in Ukraine each month. Just 10 years ago, Ukrainians were welcoming about 32,000 children into the world.

Slightly more boys are born: 51% compared to 49% girls.

Kyiv leads in the number of newborns — one in every nine babies (8,352) was born there. Despite the decline, Lviv Oblast ranks second with 6,617 children. Also among the top regions for birth rates are Dnipropetrovsk Oblast (5,611) and Odesa Oblast (5,450).

Two regions consistently lead in deaths in Ukraine. The largest increase in the number of deaths was recorded in the capital —an 11% rise, totaling 20,121 cases over the first six months of 2026. However, as always, the highest number of deaths was recorded in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast —28,386, accounting for one in every nine deaths in Ukraine.

The situation is worst in the frontline regions: Donetsk Oblast (1 newborn for every 19 deaths), Kherson Oblast — 1 to 14, and Sumy, Chernihiv, and Kharkiv Oblasts — 1 to 6.

It is noted that the most optimistic situation is in Rivne, Volyn, and Zakarpattia regions — there, there are 2 deaths for every 1 newborn.

As a reminder, the European Union has extended temporary protection for Ukrainians until March 4, 2028, but has introduced a new condition: border guards have responded.
