The number of cultural heritage sites damaged as a result of attacks by the Russian Federation has risen sharply in Kyiv

The number of cultural heritage sites damaged as a result of Russian airstrikes has increased in Kyiv: for example, in 2026 alone—which is still ongoing—the Russians have already damaged 161 such sites, compared to 110 over the previous four years.
This is stated in the response from the Department of Cultural Heritage Protection of the executive body of the Kyiv City Council (Kyiv City State Administration) to a request from “Shelter.”
In particular, the response noted that as a result of shelling since 2022, 271 cultural heritage sites in Kyiv have been damaged (a total of over 290 hits have been recorded).
Of these, 45 cultural heritage sites were damaged in 2022 due to Russian attacks, 3 in 2023, 17 in 2024, 70 in 2025, and 161 in 2026.
As a reminder, in June, buildings at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra were damaged as a result of Russian shelling.
