The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved the appointment of Yevhen Khmara as acting Minister of Defense of Ukraine. The government’s decision officially took effect today, July 20, 2026.
This is reported on the Cabinet of Ministers’ website.
The new head of the Defense Ministry has extensive experience in the national security sector and in directly commanding combat units.
Prior to this appointment, Khmara served as acting head of the Security Service of Ukraine and also led an elite unit of the security service – the SBU’s Special Operations Center “A” (Alpha).
Late last week, on July 17, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued decrees relieving Yevhen Khmara of his leadership positions at the Security Service of Ukraine, after which his candidacy was approved by the government for a leadership position at the Ministry of Defense.
It is worth noting that Yevhen Khmara’s strengths are currently needed in the role of Ukraine’s Minister of Defense. Presidential adviser Dmytro Lytvyn shared this information with journalists.
