Ukraine and Canada sign 100-year partnership agreement

This was announced at a joint press conference held by Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine and Canada have forged strong ties between their peoples and governments over the years of the war. The signed declaration expresses the two countries’ intention to elevate bilateral relations to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership.

The president also thanked Mark Carney for the invitation and for Canada’s support of Ukraine, particularly for the aid packages Ottawa has provided throughout the full-scale war.

Canada is preparing new military aid

During the talks, the Ukrainian and Canadian sides discussed a winter support package and energy issues.

They paid particular attention to strengthening Ukraine’s air defense. Zelenskyy emphasized that there is a significant global shortage of air defense systems and missiles for them, so Canada’s support in this area is especially important.

Canada to step up support for Ukraine’s energy sector

According to Denys Shmyhal, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Ukraine and Canada signed a joint statement on deepening energy cooperation.

Canada is allocating:

• 757 million Canadian dollars for emergency gas purchases and building reserves ahead of winter through EBRD programs;
• 10 million Canadian dollars—an additional contribution to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund (Canada’s total contribution will reach 100 million Canadian dollars);
• 200 million Canadian dollars – financing from Export Development Canada for priority energy projects, particularly hydropower;
• Energoatom and Cameco will continue their strategic partnership on uranium supplies and conversion services through 2035.

The countries will also deepen cooperation in the areas of renewable energy, energy storage, grid modernization, and engaging Canadian businesses in the reconstruction of Ukraine’s energy sector.

As a reminder, Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Canada on September 10 for a three-day visit. The parties will discuss air defense and preparations for winter. The president and first lady will attend events in Calgary, Toronto, and North Bay.
