A 23-year-old driver of a Volkswagen Golf, who crashed into a public transportation stop on Chokolivsky Boulevard in Kyiv’s Solomyanskyi District on the morning of August 19, has been notified that he is a suspect.
This was reported by the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office.
The offender’s actions have been classified under Part 3 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—a traffic violation resulting in the death of several people.
According to the investigation, the man was driving in the public transportation lane from Yerevanska Street toward Umanska Street. While attempting to change lanes, he collided head-on with a “Bogdan” route bus. After that, the car lost control and veered into a bus stop where people were waiting.
Two women, aged 35 and 52, were killed in the traffic accident. Four other people were injured: two men, aged 33 and 24, a 67-year-old woman, and an 18-year-old girl. Doctors are fighting to save the life of the 24-year-old man, who suffered severe injuries.
The driver was detained. Preliminary findings indicate that he was sober. The penalty under this article provides for up to 10 years in prison and a 3-year suspension of his driver’s license.
As a reminder, a fatal traffic accident occurred in Kyiv: a car crashed into a bus stop filled with people at full speed, resulting in fatalities and injuries. The tragedy once again raises questions about the adequacy of penalties for speeding—one of the main causes of traffic accidents resulting in casualties.
