Drones attacked Yaroslavl, Moscow, and the Saratov Region: The General Staff confirmed that an oil refinery was hit

Update, 11:15 a.m.:

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed that on the night of August 28, the Ukrainian Defense Forces struck the "Slavneft-YANOS" oil refinery in the Yaroslavl region of the Russian Federation. A fire was reported on the refinery’s premises. The extent of the damage is being assessed.

The facility produces, among other things, gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel, and is involved in meeting the needs of the Russian military.

Social media reports indicated that drones attacked the industrial zone where the Yaroslavl oil refinery is located during the night. The facility in question is “Slavneft-YANOS”—one of Russia’s largest oil refineries. The average annual refining capacity is approximately 15 million metric tons of crude oil.

Regional Governor Mikhail Evraev announced a temporary road closure on the exit from Yaroslavl toward Moscow. Due to security measures, vehicles are not being allowed through the section from the intersection of Moskovsky Prospekt and the Southwestern Ring Road.

Drones attacked the Moscow suburbs and Moscow. The mayor of the Russian capital reported that two drones were shot down, and black smoke is rising over Pavlovsky Posad. It is noted that a “Magnit” supermarket caught fire in the city. Prior to this, residents heard the sounds of air defense systems in operation.

Local residents are reporting numerous explosions in the Engels area of the Saratov region. The "Engels-2" military airfield was likely targeted by drones. 

Information is circulating on Telegram channels about a possible fire involving one of the Tu-95 strategic bombers. This information has not yet been officially confirmed.

Russian authorities have also declared a red alert in the Vladimir and Ivanovo regions, as well as in the southeastern part of the Moscow region.

As a reminder, on August 26, the Russian NORSI oil refinery—the fourth-largest refinery in Russia and the second-largest in terms of gasoline production—halted oil refining operations following an attack by Ukrainian drones.
