Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga called on international partners to help Ukraine replace locomotives damaged or destroyed by Russian strikes.
Andriy Sibiga wrote about this on social media platform X.
According to him, since the start of the full-scale invasion, more than 500 locomotives have been damaged or completely destroyed as a result of Russian attacks. More than half of them were damaged or destroyed in 2026 alone.
The minister emphasized that the Ukrainian railway plays a key role in ensuring the country’s vital functions. It is used for the rapid evacuation of civilians from frontline areas, the transport of essential cargo, as well as the shipment of grain and other critically important goods.
We urge all our partners to urgently assist us in finding locomotives compatible with the 1,520-mm gauge, as well as in providing funding to expedite the procurement of new ones
Andriy SybigaMinister of Foreign Affairs
According to the minister, support for the Ukrainian railway system should help prevent a humanitarian crisis and strengthen the country’s resilience amid a full-scale war.
As a reminder, former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, following an attack on a Ukrainian locomotive near the Polish border, called for providing Ukraine with the necessary air defense capabilities and transferring frozen Russian funds to the country
