Overnight in Kryvyi Rih, ArcelorMittal came under attack by Russia—two employees were killed

On the night of September 12, Russian forces launched a missile strike on the ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih mining and metallurgical plant. Two people were killed and two others were injured as a result of the strike.
This was reported by the press office of "ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih."
According to the company, two employees of contractor organizations were killed as a result of the hostile attack; the body of another man, who had been reported missing, was recovered from the rubble.
Two company employees were injured and hospitalized at medical facilities in Kryvyi Rih.
UPDATE 12:20:
According to Oleksandr Hanzha, head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration, four people were injured in the attack. Two of them remain in the hospital; a 54-year-old man is in serious condition.
The plant has activated its emergency response plan.
The rocket strike damaged the plant’s production and support facilities. Specialists are currently surveying the area to assess the extent of the damage and determine the feasibility and timeline for resuming operations.
ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih emphasized that the plant is a civilian industrial facility and strongly condemned yet another attack by the Russian Federation.
What is known about PJSC “ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih”
ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih PJSC is the largest enterprise in Ukraine’s mining and metallurgical complex, accounting for 20% of the metal products market. The plant is part of the international corporation ArcelorMittal—the largest foreign investor in Ukraine. The plant’s historical names include: the Lenin Kryvyi Rih Metallurgical Plant (until 1991), “Kryvorizhstal” (until 2005), and “Mittal Steel Kryvyi Rih” (2005–2007).
The enterprise has a full production cycle—from iron ore mining and coke production to the manufacture of finished rolled steel products. The plant specializes in the production of long and shaped rolled products (rebar, wire rod, angles, strips, and billets). Its production capacity is designed to produce over 6 million metric tons of steel, 5.5 million metric tons of pig iron, and over 5 million metric tons of rolled steel annually. Approximately 85% of the plant’s output is exported.
On December 5, 2022, one employee was killed and three were injured as a result of a Russian missile strike on the plant’s premises. On June 6, 2023, after the Russians blew up the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant, the plant was forced to halt steel smelting and rolled steel production to conserve water for cooling. In May 2026, the plant faced a critical shortage of raw materials due to delivery delays by Ukrzaliznytsia.
As a reminder, on the night of September 12, Kryvyi Rih came under ballistic missile fire, and in the early morning, the city was attacked by drones. The strikes damaged an industrial facility, five apartment buildings, a primary health care center, three educational institutions, and several businesses. One man was killed at the scene, and another person was reported missing.
The Russians carried out a previous attack on “Arcelor” on the night of August 16, striking the plant with a missile. Three people—employees of the plant—were killed in that attack.
In addition, on the night of September 5, Russian forces fired five ballistic missiles at the city of Kamianske in the Dnipropetrovsk region, one of the targets being the city’s main employer—the “Kametstal” metallurgical plant. Five people were killed in the strike, and the plant was forced to completely halt production due to the damage sustained.
